#WarwickAleTour - Venue Number Two

Hopefully this won't get too boring, but here's the clue to our second venue on the Warwick Ale Tour...

Venue Number Two

#WarwickAleTour - Venue Number Five

We'll finish our right royal knees up at this rather fine pub...

#WarwickAleTour - Venue Number Four

Be bold, have a guess, below is a graphic that might give you a clue to the fourth venue on the Warwick Ale Tour...

Venue Number Four

#WarwickAleTour - Venue Number Three

A quick nice and punchy post for you, here's a clue to the third venue...

Venue Number Three

#WarwickAleTour - Venue Number One

Ahoy there!

You'll soon see some of the rather fantastic #WarwickAleTour posters popping up across Warwick.

A massive thanks to thrillstardesign for designing them for us, very charitable of you, we owe you a pint! They're a small local graphic design studio in Warwick, who come highly recommended!

Top marks to Charlie Hunter, the main beer drinker, erm, I mean man, behind the tour. You'll meet him if you come along.

Also props to the Warwick Rocks and Food & Film Festival crew for endorsing and getting behind the event, albeit not strictly film or food (although we've had a few pints of stout in the past that were more than a meal themselves!).

Anyways, without further ado, it's my great pleasure to announce* the first venue on the 2013 Warwick Ale Tour...

Venue Number One

* OK, well, announce is hardly the right term, but some of you will know which venue this is.

Warwick Ale Tour 2013 - Warwick Rocks Food and Film Festival

Warwick Ale Tour

It's happening, soon. Sunday 25th August to be precise.

It's a free walking ale tour around five of Warwick's finest drinking establishments, serving the very best in Real Ale.

There will be knowledgeable helpers on hand to guide you through the hoppy delights that await you.

You'll also visit a brewery, be talked through the beer making process by a local brewery, embark upon a few mini-pub quizzes, make new friends and perhaps have a couple of drinks on the way.

Best of all, we'll make sure that we finish up in Warwick's Market Square ready for the evening showing of Princess Bride.

It'll all start at around 12:30pm at a venue soon to be announced.

Please make sure that you've registered in advance of the crawl, ticket information coming soon.

(re) Born to Run...! - Running around Warwickshire, Warwick, Leamington and Hampton Magna

It was on Saturday 16th March 2013 at 9:31am that I realised I needed to get quicker at running.

Exactly 30 minutes and 8 seconds earlier, I had just started my first ParkRun in two years (I had done two back in 2011).

I play a few sports, I'm not a super athlete but I'm not mega unfit, or at least I thought not! Five very slow kilometers later, after being overtaken by all and sundry, including kids, mothers, dog walkers and even people pushing buggies, I realised that I should be running quicker than I was.

Back in 2011 I ran my very first ParkRun in 26:36, which to you half-able runners is slow, I know, but for me, was (until yesterday) my PB. Fast forward two years, and I was three and a half minutes slower (quite a bit over a relatively short distance).

It was at 9:31am on Saturday 16th March this year that I decided to do something about it, I decided I'd run it quicker, I decided that I should be running 5k in around 25 minutes, and I decided I'd reduce my time by a minute each month until I did so.

The plan was to do a sub-30min in April, sub-29min in May, sub-28min in June, sub-27min in July, sub-26min in August, finishing in September with a sub-25minute time for a 5k run.

The time could be set at any time, anywhere, provided that it was over a distance of 5km.

You'll see from the graph below, that so far I've been hitting my targets (albeit just in June!).

As part of my plan, I joined the Hampton Magna Harriers beginners running group, led by Anthony and Clare, it was a great way to continue and improve my running, it's almost fun even!

Warwick Racecourse, Toasty Warm.

Last night was the final session in the beginners course, which culminated in a timed 5k run (about two laps) around Warwick Racecourse. For those that remember, last night was hot, very hot, hot hot hot. I set off at a half-decent pace, and completed the first lap with relative ease. It was a lovely sunny evening, and is a very picturesque spot for a run. The start of the second lap was hard, I'd seen it all before, and there seemed to be even less of a breeze this time. It continued to get harder and harder, and I came close to walking, but I knew if I did that, then I'd struggle to get started again. I slowed my pace, gathered my breath, composed myself, then kicked on in the second half of the second lap (any Americans reading this would probably refer to it as the final quarter!). Cheered on by the HMH coaches and other runners, I managed to smash my sub-27min target, with a time of 26:31. Which for me is pretty good, in fact, it's a new PB (if only by 5 seconds).

The trick now is to continue my progress, I've got to shave off a further 91 seconds before the end of September. I've been trying to jog every morning before work, and run occasional interval training in the evenings when I get chance. I'd be grateful for any readers tips if you have them?!

Hopefully I'm getting towards a pace now where I'll be comfortable running alongside the intermediates at Hampton Magna Harriers and joining in with the #WarwickRunClub! (When I get chance that is, the calendar is looking very busy for the near future).

Anyways, if you see me running along the Grand Union Canal in the morning, say hello!

Grand Union Canal, better than a treadmill.

If I hit my targets over the next months, expect another blog post; and if I don't, then this is likely to be the last post on the subject!

2015 Update:

So it's taken a while (yes, ages, I know!) but I've finally got back out and running again a bit. My original aim was to run a sub 25 minute 5k.

Last month (April) I ran the Leamington Parkrun (25.04.15) and managed to get under 26 minutes. I felt great and went around the course in 25:30, a half minute underneath my milestone target.

This month (May) I was holidaying in Devon and ran the Killerton Parkrun (02.05.15). It's been just over two years since I started this post, with a sub 25min 5k as the target, and I managed it. Knocking almost a minute off the PB from the month before, getting around a very undulating course in 24:32!

I wonder if a sub-24 minute, sub-23 minute, or even a sub-22 minute 5k is possible?!

Blog on the Tyne, or Folk on the Water

Blog on the Tyne is all mine, all mine, but the Folk on the Water is for the people.

If you've not heard of it before, basically it's a floating music festival in Warwickshire. Several musicians jump on a boat, and take their time pootling along the Grand Union Canal, playing the odd gig along the way.

It's been running 21st June, and will continue to run until 7th July, the last three days of which are in Royal Leamington Spa and Warwick.

Friday 5th July - The Grand Union, Leamington Spa

On Friday the Kate's Boats narrowboat moors up in Leamington. On board will be:

Kathryn Hallberg
Matt Hernandez
RemedySounds
Hollie Aires
Anna Baines
Tiz McNamara

Apparently Kathryn has flown all the way from Austin, Texas for the festival, that's committed!

Saturday 6th July - The Cape of Good Hope, Warwick

The Saturday will see the narrowboat moored near my home in Warwick, artists appearing are:

Ian Bourne
Waiting for Susan
Matt Hernandez
RemedySounds
Joe Dolman
Will Johnson
Kathryn Hallberg

Some of you may recognise Matt Hernandez from his acoustic shows at the Wild Boar in Warwick and the Clarendon in Leamington.

Sunday 7th July - The Cape of Good Hope, Warwick

The Cape has it's second night of Music on Sunday night, those playing will be:

Daisy Chain Quartet
Supine Orchestra
Miss Ellie
Huffy
James Herring & Band

I had the pleasure of seeing Miss Ellie at a recent concert in Warwick, she was absolutely fantastic! Well worth venturing out on a sunday night for. It's a cracking pub for a pint too!

So why not get out of the house, get yourself a pint and listen to some live music, it's all FREE!

Update: after watching a few videos, that RemedySounds chap looks like he'll be well worth a watch.

Also, it seems Waiting for Susan do a few cracking covers!

Glastonbury Festival - highly valuable cheap items

As you'll no doubt be aware, this weekend is Glastonbury Festival.

A funny thing happens at Pilton Farm, for this weekend only, certain items will become worth their weight in gold at this music festival. Use this as a sort of beginners guide to Glastonbury, or a useful check list of what to take for Glastonbury Virgins...

(1.) Toilet Paper
Lets get this one out of the way first. It seems that no-one is able to write about Glastonbury without mentioning the toilets. You'll need to remember your own TP, or beg/borrow/steal* some.

* don't steal kids, it's wrong.

(2.) Cold Cans of Beer
The sun will come out at some point, heating up your tent and heating up that crate of Stella that you used for a pillow last night. Somehow, someone, somewhere has COLD cans of beer, the holy grail. How have they managed that? You've got no idea, but it tastes sooo good.

(3.) Wellington Boots
It will be sunny at some point, but it will also rain, lots. With thousands of people walking over the grass, it soon turns into knee deep mud. Wellies will save you from the dreaded trenchfoot!

(4.) Schedule/Programme
Everyone gets given one on their way into the festival, but everyone loses them. If you want to know who's next appearing on the JazzWorld Stage, you'll need to nestle up next to your neighbour and take a look at their schedule. Be prepared to get close, they come on little lanyard things, and people are unwilling to take theirs off from around their neck, in case they lose them, like you did with yours!

(5.) Phone Battery
The king of kings, phone battery. You set off from your house with 100% battery, brilliant you think. Getting excitable on the drive to Somerset you check the weather, text your friends, update your facespace with who you're looking forward to seeing. You check out the rumours of Daft Punk or David Bowie* playing secret sets. You check out the latest happenings at Wimbledon, apparently all the favourites are getting knocked out?! Suddenly you're down to 72% battery already. The first night you phone around a few friends, you arrange to meet up at the big stage "near the right", can't find them and phone them a few times again. You're down to 37%, it's still only the first day! Phone battery towards the end of the festival is a rare thing, befriend those who have it. Leave it too late however, and it's useless, who else are you going to phone, their phone went flat on the first day!

* I saw David Bowie headline Glastonbury in 2000, it was pretty much the best gig I've ever been to, if he plays this year and I miss it, I'll be gutted. Fact.

New Post, New Look Blog, New Logo, Same Old Warwick Witter!

You may have noticed our new design of our blog, and our brand new logo.

New Logo and Twitter Avatar

I think it's amazing! I hope you agree. It was created for us by ThrillstarDesign , they're a new graphic design studio based here in Warwick. I know it seems a bit over the top to get an avatar and twitter banner (see below) created for you by a design studio, but it was only a few quid and looks fantastic!

Twitter Banner

ThrillstarDesign are on twitter @thrillsdesign, and are very quick at getting back to you to answer your questions or queries or to give you updates. I really cannot recommend them enough!

Or perhaps the reason we got on so well, is due to our mutual love of stars! :)

So, what do people think, do they prefer the new WW or the old WW logo?

British & Irish Lions 2013: Now Showing in Warwick and Leamington, Warwickshire

So, a bunch of our boys from Blighty are off 'down-under' soon to play hand-egg-ball against a load of Aussies.

The British and Irish Lions rugby tour of Austraila starts on Wednesday 5th of June against Super XV team the Western Force, prior to this however, the Lions warm up with a game against the Barbarians on June 1st in Hong Kong.

As an aside, calling them the British and Irish Lions, does that not refer to the Northern Irish players twice? As it's not the British and Republic of Ireland Lions, anyways, I digress...

The three test matches against the Wallabies are supplemented with six other games against regional teams throughout Australia. The tests are on Saturday mornings (evening matches in Australia), with some of the regional games falling midweek.

Outdoor Film Viewings - Top Movies to Watch Outside

Inspired by the forthcoming Food and Film Festival in Warwick, I started wondering what were good movies for outdoor screenings, and what makes them good choices.

Like it or not, at outdoor screenings you don't tend to see the screen so clearly, be it with your view blocked by bobbing heads in front of you, or poor contrast on the screen due to the sunlight. So the movie needs to be big, bold and clear, or a film where you aren't reliant on seeing too much detail.

The sound is usually a bit shabby too, either the wind is blowing most of those decibels in the other direction or the people next to you are insistent that now is the time to talk about Radiohead's ground-breaking second album. So the sound needs to be cranked up, or a film without too much quiet dialogue.

Also, it needs to be FUN. No one wants to go to an outdoor screen of Schindler's List, regardless of how good it is.

So without further ado, here are my current thoughts...

The Warriors
Quadrophenia
The Big Lebowski
Point Break
Speed
Top Gun
Clerks
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

What are your suggestions?

Tweet me on Twitface, or leave a comment below.

Am thinking of hosting my own mini-film showing in preparation for the big one in August!

I'm picturing something like this, although being Blighty, I'll probably need an umbrella!

Anyone done anything similar to a DIY type showing before?

Bowling Green - Local Badminton Club

A local badminton club has asked that I share this, why not do the same.

Bowling Green Badminton Club

POETS Day

...need I say more?!

POETS Day

Shop Warwick Month - A Synopsis

Throughout the whole of April, I committed to only shopping at independent traders in Warwick.

It was inspired by some twitterings on twitface by the Warwick Twassive.

The idea was to test if you could get everything you needed for a whole month from local shops for local people.

I soon had to bend the rules. I live in Warwick, but work in Leamington. Therefore I decided to allow myself to 'shop locally' provided it was from an independent store.

A few others from the #WarwickTwassive (that's Twitter-Massive BTW!) also embarked upon #ShopTwitterMonth. They too each had their own spin on what it meant to them. Some shopped at chain stores too, provided they were within Warwick, for others it was watching the pennies, and for some it was more of a photographic record.

Shop Warwick Month - Local Independent Shopping

I was able to buy pretty much everything I needed locally and from independents. Mostly due to, as it turns out, I don't actually tend to buy much! The better half gets in most of the food, including a delivered Veg box.

I found the weekly market in Market Square on Saturdays was a great opportunity to 'stock-up' for the rest of the week.

Warwick Market

You can get pretty much everything you need there, including loads of fruit and veg, and some very very nice coffee.

Also, when heading to the pub, I've got a few fantastic locals to choose from.

Cape of Good Hope
Dave Myers, Hairy Biker

Including the Cape of Good Hope (albeit closed temporarily at the time of writing) where I met Hairy Biker legend Dave Myers. I also tried to keep my drink choices "locally independent", which is easily done with their great selection of local ales. Including Two'llocks from Church End Brewery and Old Tom from Church Farm Brewery (I don't confused those breweries quite so much these days either!

Further down the road is The Wild Boar, which is also a great pub, with great service and great ale, some of which is brewed on the premises!

Wild Boar, Beer Menu

The also have a 'Beer Menu', how great is that?! That goes to show what a great selection they have.

Twitface has also been a great aid to help me keep shopping locally and independently, people are more than happy to help you find where to buy certain items. It's also a great way to hear of local events.

Including a film premier at The Wild Boar, and also last nights (re)opening of The Punchbowl.

Overall #ShopWarwickMonth was a real success, it goes to show you can get what you need locally and independently. Sometimes it'll cost a little more, but you generally get better service. Sometimes it'll take a little longer, but you get a better quality product. Why not give it a go yourself? I'd love to hear from you if you do.

It's also given me a chance to make little poster thingies too.

In summary, you could say, that #WarwickRocks

If you get bored, give me a follow and say hello on twitface, @WarwickWitter

The Punchbowl, The Butts, Warwick - Opening

The Punchbowl in Warwick (not the Lapworth one) is reopening tonight (Thursday 2nd May).

Punchbowl, Warwick

It's had a bit of a refurb and tidy up, and there's been lots of anticipation for it's opening. They've even had a massive countdown clock outside.

How the Punchbowl used to look.
Apparently there will be assorted merriment tonight, including live music and a hog roast.

I'll be there, perhaps you should head down too.

#TUNESDAY (a little late!) - Haim, James Blake, Daft Punk ft. Pharrell (and a nod to Alesha Dixon)

So, a little bit late, but here's yesterday's TUNESDAY post.

I've just got Spotify Premium, okay okay, so I'm a few years behind everyone else, but I still enjoy buying and listening to CDs and Record. I've not realised there's space for them alongside this new fangled technology whereby every artist I can think of all fit into a little box.

Anyways, without further ado, here's three songs that I'm loving at the moment; I think it helps that the sun is out!

"Don't Save Me" by Haim
It's a bloody great summery tune, which immediately grabs you. Highly enjoyable.

Haim

"Retrograde" by James Blake
Got a rather lovely subtle electronic base loop thing. Also highly enjoyable.

James Blake

"Get Lucky" by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell
Daft Punk must have been listening to their Marvin Gaye records, a lot. That's no bad thing, as this track is highly enjoyable also.

Daft Punk ft. Pharrell

You might know Pharrell from The Neptunes, or his other band 'N*E*R*D', who did the very good "She Wants To Move Track" with the very excellent video featuring Alesha Dixon, which is highly enjoyable. Said track features the classic line, "her ass is a spaceship I want to ride", brilliant.

Alesha Dixon in "She Wants to Move"

Go and check these songs out, tell me what you think, recommend some more to me.

If I get chance I'll do a Spotify playlist, or whatever the cool cats do these days.

Enjoy.

Friday Friday..

It's the weekend, this means the need for a 'Beer Menu'.

That's right, The Wild Boar on Lakin Road have the very thing.

Jackpot baby.

Octothorn, Dromedaries, Harriers, BatchMan, the Warwick Twassive and Other Witterings

Blimey, where to start. I've been so busy recently, and there's been so much going on.

Lets time travel back to Thursday, which was the We Are Warwickshire film premier by Adam Swords at The Wild Boar on Lakin Road.

A half dozen short films were shown by young Warwickshire film maker Adam Swords. They are a series of black and white vignettes on local businesses in the local area. Namely:

The Bike Yard, Leamington
Cafe Catalan, Warwick
The Orangery, Kenilworth
The Wild Boar, Warwick
Crustum, Kenilworth
Brazen Ink (formerly in Warwick, now The Parlour).

The films were unexpectantly compelling and the film-maker himself very personable when introducing each of them.

Now for those that don't know, I only moved to Warwick at the start of this year, I joined Twitter at the same time (find me here if you want) and haven't looked back since! For some reason, 555 of you (at the last count) enjoy reading my witterings, but more importantly I've realised that it's a great gateway into the Warwick community. In fact, it was on Twitter that I heard about Adam's film premier.

What made it even more local, even more special, was that each of the businesses featured in the films, contributed to the night in some capacity. Billy and Sophie were there from the Bike Yard to sample the drinks. The drinks were provided by The Wild Boar, and also gave out hot chips. The hot chips were encased in delicious bread from Crustums. Before all this, Catalan provided some tasty appetisers and canapes which were given out in the fine surroundings of the Boar which had been brightened up with flowers from The Orangery. And finally, Brazen Ink had tattoo'd a picture of the Warwickshire Bear and Staff on Adam Swords' bottom*.

* one of this may not be entirely true.

It's worth mentioning that Nick from Crustums Bakery, using beer from the Slaughterhouse Brewery (some of which is brewed at The Wild Boar) made a very very very delicious 'Boar Bread'. Very very delicious.

Everything was provided free of charge from each of the businesses, and all was of the highest quality, so I'd recommend that you hunt a few of them out for yourselves.

The relaxed and friendly atmosphere made for an evening of striking up conversations with whomever happened to be nearby. At one point, that nearby person just happened to be Liz Drake of LoveWarwick twitter notoriety. It was nice to put a face to the name, and Liz said likewise. I've now met two of the Warwick Twassive in real life, the other being Jack Linstead of Warwick Rocks fame.

"Warwick Twassive?" I hear you ask. Well, I thought I'd be able to skim straight over that one, clearly not. It was a phrase I coined whilst whittling away the hours at work. From my initial beginnings on Twitface, it seems that there are a group of Warwick twitters who make up the core of Warwick's online presence. The Warwick Twitter Massive or #WarwickTwassive (!) have been a great way to find out about new events and happenings in Warwick for me. If you've got any more witterings for me, come and say hi here.

Warwick Warwickshire Twassive
Warwick Twassive

Which brings me onto the next topic of conversation, the 'hash tag' or the #hashtag. I think it was Warwick's main Monster Muncher, Vicky Jackson, that posed the question, what are these "# # #" things? I know them as the number symbol, as in Vicky is Warwick's #1 Monster Muncher. Most people in the #WarwickTwassive know them as Hash Tags, the symbol that goes ahead of twitface key words to help you  search/follow them. The more musical among us may think of them as a 'sharp', as in play C#. American's may refer to them as the Pound sign (as a unit of weight). Or, if we were around good few years ago and lived in a small hamlet, with eight land-holdings all around us, we may know it as an Octothorpe. Yes, an Octothorpe. This fact pretty much made Gareth Dore's day.

An Octothorpe
More twitter witterings were around the topic of the forthcoming Warwick Rock's Festival of Food and Film, who are now also on twitface. On the subject of Food and Film, I offered up a couple of gourmet fusion film titles. I think the first couple were "Lambshank Redemption" and "Pie Hard". Suddenly twitter went coco loco, and immediately loads other suggestions from the #WarwickTwassive were being suggested. You can find more of these on an earlier post of Warwick Witterings. Todd from WarwickTweetUp suggested "Bapman", which with my midlands slant on it, turned it into "BatchMan". I think this combined effort, along with "Planet of the Crepes" from Hannah are my personal favourites. What about you?

Which leaves me trying to find a link to my next topic from the ministry of information that is the Warwick Witter. Speaking of which Ministry were a rock band from Chicago, who released the album "Dark Side of the Spoon", another food fusion pun, and it was Storm Thorgerson who designed the cover for Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". Tenuous I know, but I got there! Anyway, all the to say that Storm, an album art visionary sadly passed away last Thursday.

Readers of this blog may or may not know that I've been embarking upon #ShopWarwickMonth throughout the whole of April. As it turns out, I don't actually buy 'much', the better half seems to get the lions share of our daily rations. However, where I have needed something, I've tried my best to Shop Locally and Shop Independently (yes, all on my own, I'm a big boy now!). On Friday night, me and the earlier mentioned better half went to the Warwick Arms Hotel for their highly recommended Fish & Chips night. (£25 gets you two generous portions of Fish N Chips and a bottle of fizz).

Further twitface conversation reveled that they are also open for coffee and cake throughout the day. Apparently they used to offer coffee to take away, but it wasn't a success, but if you take your own cup in, they'd be happy to fill it for you.

In addition to this revelation, they serve tea, coffee and cake all day. This is great news, as there's usually little selection of where to go later in the evening other than a pub. Don't get me wrong, this is normally the right choice to make, but for when I fancy something non-alcoholic I'll now know where to go. From the outside of the Warwick Arms Hotel, it's not immediately obvious to me that non-residents are welcome at any time of the day for an americano and slice of carrot cake, but now, thanks to twitface, I know.

Similarly there are a number of restaurants in Warwick that are happy for you to visit for just a coffee, a glass of wine or a slice of lemon tart. Both Piccolinos and Aqua Food & Mood welcome in patrons regardless of if they want a three course meal or a glass of prosecco. As Aqua's Abz stated, they're there for "Food AND Mood!". What other restaurants offer this in Warwickshire, where else can you go along for just a tipple if you wish?

Back to the blog, and the most read post on Warwick Witterings so far is the "Coming soon in Warwick & Leamington" post. Well, almost in stark contrast, a 'recently closed' entry is The Cape of Good Hope pub. Which is sad news, as it's a fantastic canalside drinking hole. Although I'm reliably informed it'll be soon reopened, and better than before! More news as I get it.

Right, well if you're still reading, well done you.

Some things I've not even had chance to mention are Dromedaries and Bactrian camels (you learn something new on twitter everyday!), the former has one hump, the latter has two. Jenny from Sweet As Cakes spotted  one in Leek Wootton.

Skett's Markets are starting a new CRAVE (Craft Retro Antique Village Event) Market in Warwick on Sundays starting from May 5th.

Sunday was Record Store Day, HEAD in Leamington, an indie record shop, had some great records (yes, actual vinyl) issued exclusively for independent retailers to sell on #recordstoreday . If you've not been in, it's a great shop, with some very helpful and knowledgeable staff.

...and finally, on Saturday morning I was motivated to take part in my fifth every ParkRun. It's a free weekly 5km run around Leamington's Newbold Comyn. The sun was out, and it was a near perfect start to the weekend and get over the hangover. In short, I'm now inspired to try and know 5 minutes off my 5k time over the next 5 months. I think I may need the help of #WarwickRunClub , Spa Striders, Warwick Wasps or the Hampton Magna Harriers, or perhaps all of them?!

It seems this whole blog post was written whilst you were all watching Olivia Coleman (of Peep Show fame!) in Broadchurch (#broadchurch) on TV and whilst Manchester United were crowned 2012/2013 Champions by winning the Premier League.
